==Early life and family==

She was born ''Helen Lydia Mironoff''〔''Births, Marriages & Deaths Index of England & Wales, 1916–2005.''; at ancestry.com〕 in Hammersmith, London, the daughter of Kathleen "Kitty" Alexandrina Eva Matilda (née Rogers; 1909–1996) and Vasily Petrovich Mironoff (1913–1980). Her mother was English and her father was Russian, originally from Kuryanovo, Smolensk Oblast.〔According to her 2007 memoirs "the fastest birth on record at that time. I wonder if anyone has broken it yet?"〕〔(Helen Mirren reveals the joy of meeting her Russian relatives ). Dailymail.co.uk (17 September 2013). Retrieved on 30 December 2013〕〔. nationsmemorybank.com〕 Mirren's paternal grandfather, Colonel Pyotr Vasilievich Mironov, was in the Imperial Russian Army and fought in the 1904 Russo-Japanese War. He later became a diplomat, and was negotiating an arms deal in Britain when he and his family were stranded during the Russian Revolution.〔(Pyotr Vasilievich Mironov Collection: The Russian Government Committee in London (1914–1939) ). Ssees.ucl.ac.uk. Retrieved on 30 December 2013〕 The former diplomat became a London cab driver to support his family and eventually settled down in England.
His son, Helen Mirren's father, anglicised the family name to Mirren in the 1950s and changed his name to Basil Mirren. He played the viola with the London Philharmonic before World War II, and later drove a taxi cab and was a driving-test examiner, before becoming a civil servant with the Ministry of Transport. Mirren's mother was a working-class Londoner from West Ham, East London, and was the 13th of 14 children born to a butcher whose own father had been the butcher to Queen Victoria.〔 Mirren considers her upbringing to have been "very anti-monarchist".〔Finn, Natalie (26 February 2007) . E! Online. Retrieved on 30 December 2013〕 Mirren was the second of three children; she was born three years after her older sister Katherine ("Kate"; born 1942), and had a younger brother Peter Basil (1948 - 2002), who was named after his grandfather and great-great-grandfather. Mirren was brought up in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.〔Piccalo, Gina (7 February 2011) ("Helen Mirren interview" ). The Telegraph. Retrieved 6 November 2012〕
